Tell me more about how you start? Did you always love music? Why?

You create band named Gonia – what Gonia means and why did you choose this name?

You start as a christian jazz band. But your last CD called Melt has nothing to do with christianity. Why did you change this?

How do you think you evolve as an artist from first CD to the last? How hard was your journey?

Is there any theme or main motive of your CD Melt ?

Korean Traditional music is in opposite relationship to the most popular music trend is South Korea, which is K-pop. Why do you think that the Korean traditional music is important for your culture. And also for young people?

What is your biggest and greatest experience in music you ever have?

When you travel you listening lot of different kind of music. Is there anything that could you find fascinating about other cultures in musical way?

Why did you choose jazz and not anything else?

How do you work on your music? Where do you find inspiration. How long take you make one track?

What is your biggest idol´s in musical sphere?

Can you tell us more about your collaboration with Sungchun Lee and Soundpuzzle?

What are you preparing in the near future? Could we expected some new CD?

Can you tell me more about your beginnings with music? Did you always love music?

It was in elementary school when I first started to learn the music. I attended a music school, like my uncle who learned guitar, from the third grade to the sixth grade of elementary school. When I was young, my uncle was injured in an accident and could not see, which was why I went to school with my uncle. I read the notes for him and that’s pretty much how I started to learn the music.

You create band named Gonia – what the meaning of that name and why did you choose this name?

Gonia is the Hebrew word for „corner stone,“ and corner stone was used to be a reference point when building a building in ancient times. So, I named our band like this because I wanted to be both, reference point and the center in Jazz.

You start as a Christian jazz band. But your last CD called Melt has nothing to do with Christianity. Why did you change this?

Out debut album is CCM (Contemporary Christian music) with Christian jazz band. However, it was difficult for us to work in CCM genre, because our music had nothing to do with CCM. It was also hard for us to work in Jazz genre, since our music also had some spirit of religious property. So, we decided to concentrate more on music and decided to make jazz music, that would make each member stand out as much as possible.

How do you think you evolved, as an artist, from the first CD to the last? Was your journey hard?

After creating a band in 2007 and working until 2019, there were many difficulties. First of all, it was difficult to earn money with music. It was especially hard for a band like ours. Not only was it difficult to live with music, but making albums was not easy also. Another reason was, that after the first album, we had a dispute between members which made the drummer to leave the band. It was too hard to find a drum player that fits our music after that. I could not find a drummer whose musical views and thoughts fit ours. So, there was a gap of about five years, between our first and second album. Since then, we worked with a new drum player. So, there is a new drummer, for every release of a regular album. The current one is our fourth. Even with all these difficulties, the driving force that could made us work for more than 10 years, was ourbass player Kim Min Sung, who worked with us from the beginning. He was our musical companion and a friend, who we could count on so that we could trust each other. I think this is how we could work for more than ten years and grow together.

Is there any theme or main motifon your CD Melt?

The album Melt was created with a motif of three musicians and three different instruments being made into a single melody. The emphasis was on making music while supporting each other to maximize their performance.

Korean Traditional music is in opposite relationship to the most popular music trend is South Korea, which is K-pop. Why do you think that the Korean traditional music is important for your culture. And also for young people?

I do not think Korean traditional music and K-pop are in an opposite relationship. I think that Korean traditional music and K-pop have the same roots, although there are differences in genres. The reason is that both of them are performed by Koreans and in Korea. From past, Koreans were described as people enjoying a good taste. Regardless of their social status, people have expressed their feelings by dancing and singing when they were happy or sad, when they were working andtaking a break. I think K-pop is not so different. The reason behind a small country likeKorea could gain a wide global popularity is perhaps from the customs, that were transitioned down through generations. In Korea there is a saying that goes, ‘As one sows, so shall he reap‘. It means that you will get the result from what you have done, and I believe that Korean culture is something like the seeds of our people from the past.

What is your biggest and greatest experience in music you ever have?

I used to be in a rock band with my friends during my high school days. During our practice in Summer vacation, there was a moment when I felt that all the members seemed to become one. It was long time ago, but it was a thrilling experience that I could still remember. Another one was when I was performing at one middle school. I gathered all the students in the auditorium and performed. When all the students sang along with our band, I felt something that I cannot even express, we became one with the audience.

When you travel, you are listening to a lot of different music. Is there anything that you find fascinating about other cultures in musical way?

Of course. I listen to and look for various music. Especially when I listen to Cuban music, Gypsy music, or Latin music, I feel a charm in music. I want to know about their culture and I also feel like I want to go abroad and experience the lifestyles myself. I want to meet them, find out how their music is made, and also hope I could play with them.

Why did you choose jazz and not anything else?

After graduating from college, I went to the Seoul Jazz Academy in Seoul, to formally study music. I did not even know what jazz was, but I got to study and play jazz music following the curriculum. The more I studied and practiced, the more I felt the charm of jazz, and I got so immersed into the music.

How do you work on your music? Where do you find inspiration? How long do you make one track?

I try to play as freely as possible. I think much about expressing, in a way that people can also feel what I feel. My musical inspiration is inspired by movies, books, and feelings in social relationships. Every time I make a song, it is different. If you feel any emotions or feelings, you can make songs within 30 minutes to an hour, or it could even take few days. When recording, I use one-take recording method, and I play tracks twice or more times and select the best one.

Who is your biggest musical idol?

My musical idol is Kim hae song (Kim song kyu), the first jazz composer in Korea. I think he is a pioneer in contemporary Korean music. I also idolize performers like John Abercrombie, bass player Dave Holland and drummer Jack Dejohnette who left the world in 2017. I think they rule in jazz music.

Can you tell us about your collaboration with Sungchun Lee and Soundpuzzle?

Mr. Lee seung-chun from Soundpuzzle is in charge of Gonia’s overseas promotion. He also helps with our recordings, albums and performances. He helps us overall with our musical activity.

What are you doing in the near future? Could we expect some new CD?

In the first half of 2019, Gonia’s best album will be released in LP, and we will have a performance with vocalist VivaldaDula in Seoul Music Week Showcase,as well as the Korean tour concert. In the second half of 2019, we have a plan to perform in Japan, and we will also have a project concert featuringKorean traditional musical instruments and a new release of CD. I hope we could get a lot of attention.

Čo to znamená?

Nemohol som nájsť bubeníka, ktorého hudobné názory a myšlienky zapadajú do našej kapely.

Vy ale so svojim ethnojazzom patríte k World Music.

Počas strednej školy som hral v rockovej kapele so svojimi priateľmi. Splynuli sme s publikom.

Samozrejme. Počúvam a hľadám rôznu hudbu.

Môžete nám povedať o vašej spolupráci s Sungchun Lee a Soundpuzzle?

Pán Lee seung-chun zo Soundpuzzle má na starosti zámorskú propagáciu Gonia. Pomáha nám tiež s našimi nahrávkami, albumami a predstaveniami.

V druhej polovici roku 2019 máme v pláne vystupovať v Japonsku a budeme mať aj koncert v rámci projektu s kórejskými tradičnými hudobnými nástrojmi a vydáme nové CD. Dúfam, že  ním zaujmeme čo najviac.
